Weaving Visual Narratives: "Hong Kong Still Life" Photo Exhibition Showcasing Student Creativity
In June, the Associate of Arts in Cultural Studies of the Division of Arts and Languages launched the "Hong Kong Still Life" photo exhibition at Central Market that showcased students’ creative talents. The selection is the result of a walking tour and a photo contest. Students were taught basic skills of photo composition and framing, and were encouraged to emulate the great masters, such as Ho Fan, Michael Wolf, and Romain Jacquet-Lagrèze. They roamed the streets of Central and Sheung Wan on a lecturer-curated walking tour. Through an appreciation of Hong Kong’s distinctive architecture and history, students used their cameras to build their own unique connections with the city. The best twenty photos were selected for this exhibition.
Coordinated by Dr. Dickson Cheung and Ms. Fiona Wong, lecturers from the Division of Arts and Languages, the project inspired students to explore the city through visual storytelling. The winning photograph of the contest will feature on the cover of the student journal of culture and literature, This and That vol. 12. Click here to read back issues.
"Our students find it incredibly rewarding to connect with the city and tell their own stories through the camera," said Dr. Cheung. The exhibition was very well received by the public as well. Visitors praised the students for artistically capturing everyday urban scenes and did not hesitate to bring home the free postcards printed with students' work.
